The Pharr House is a large 7 bedroom oceanfront beach house in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was built in 1934 and is located on one of the largest and most wooded oceanfront lots in the area.

Contemporary California beach house is a striking, stand-out design among the rocks and sand of its beachfront property. Two prominent volumes clad in wood and lined with windows can be seen from a distance, protruding from the structure’s main body, resulting in nooks of wind-sheltered outdoor living spaces with Pacific Ocean views.


































“This beach house replaces a beloved William Wurster house that burned down on the site”, according to Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects. “The client requested we design the new house to capture the spirit of the original house, while meeting all the current seismic codes and FEMA requirements for houses in high-risk coastal zones, which included raising the floor level of the house.” Interiors are too clad in wood, giving them a warm, relaxed, “beach house” ambience.

Its monumental, modern appeal comes from an imposing concrete and glass facade, which frames views of water and sky from every room in the house. Enjoying vibrant sunsets and an endless horizon from an expansive outdoor patio, the modern home overlooks a spectacular 1,000-meter-long black-sand beach below.

The home’s modern interiors are influenced by the home’s main construction materials – concrete and glass – which give the rooms their cool, contemporary ambience.

OS House Modern - beach house

A couple bought one of the few available plots on the Bay of Biscay coastline. The plot slopes downwards and is cut by a 30 meter-high cliff against which the waves break. The Northern sea wind is very rough, making it hard for trees to grow by the coastline. The plot size is 90 x 50, 4500 m2 and 8% building rate, that is, 360 square meters. Maximum height is 3 meters eaves, 6 meters total. Distance to the lateral edges 10 meters, and 12 to the back street axis. 11 meter drop. 30 minute walk to Langre Beach and 10 to the eastern end of Puntal Beach, whose opposite end closes the Santander Bay. Bay of Biscay horizon from Cabo Mayor, to the west, all the way to Cabo de Ajo, to the east.

A new topography is defined in order to protect a rear south garden from the strong and persistent sea wind. The most exposed façade of the house is the green roof.

House Modern on the Mexican Pacific Coast

The main goal of the project was to create a low-cost and low-maintenance house that realised all the structural qualities of the material in which it was built to its full potential.

The design takes forward the idea of low-cost/low-maintenance, and applies this strategy to all the materials involved in the construction, while pushing to the limit both their technical and tectonic qualities: floor, windows, railings, etc., are done re-using materials that were previously used for pouring the concrete and for the rest of the construction process.

Perhaps, it is the space generated within inner and outer space what makes the house special. The house was designed to operate fully opened; it is then when the cantilever, this huge threshold, is fully occupied and becomes the central space of the house.

The house was awarded one of the 5 young architects honorable mentions (under 40 yr) at the Spanish Bienal of Architecture and were one of the 25th finalist including among others Nouvel’s Agbar Tower, Rogers’s Terminal 4, Miralles Santa Caterina Market or Chipperfield’s Americas Cup Building. We were also the youngest office awarded.

In Mona Vale Beach House Design

This house is able to be ‘zoned’ to 3 separate areas; the sunroom at the back, the bedroom and hallway, and the living area to the front. This assists in the retention of heat in the winter months. Cross ventilation is carefully considered through the whole house. The front living area ventilates through a series of louvres in a bank of high level clerestory., and the bedrooms also have cross ventilation via fanlight windows above doors.
